Carve a message into clay

Supplies: Clay (either regular clay that must be fired) or modeling clay that can be baked in a regular oven. Pencil or other carving tool.

1. Read Etched in Clay and discuss the heroism invovled in Dave's decision to write on his pots.  Discuss the cryptic nature of his verses and the reasons he may have written this way.

2. Carve your own messge into clay that you have made into a flattened shape.  (Older students can make pots and carve into the walls of the pots.  This is difficult as pots break easily while carving).
